Broken Band

Wooten walked into Chuck’s tavern with a frown on his young face. The kid sat at the bar and sighed heavily, waiting to be addressed.

“What gives?” Chuck asked, amenably.

“I think the band is ka-put.” Wooten said. “Schlitz. Please.”

After getting the young man his beer, Chuck busied himself cleaning a mug. Internally, he was celebrating. As much as Chuck liked live music, the Dark Devils were always a headache when they invaded open-mic nights. Typically, bands were told to stick to three or four songs at most, just so everyone could have a turn to play. The Dark Devils didn’t give a shit about that. They acted like they were the headlining act. They were blissfully and annoyingly unaware their music sounded more akin to a slippery fart than it did actual songwriting.

And Chuck liked metal. Sure, he wasn’t up to date on what was hip or what was lame, but he had a few Scorpions cassettes at home, and he’d recently discovered a band called Anvil. That band really wet his whistle.

The problem with the Dark Devils wasn’t that they were a metal group… it’s that they were a shitty metal group.

No tears would spill over the disbandment of the worst musical act in Downwich.

“What happened?” Chuck asked. “Ya’all had a fight ‘r somethin’?”

“No. Yes. I mean… yeah. Serg went haywire last night and… well, he’s not answering his phone, and neither are Louise or Wylie. I even went by Sergio’s. His parents said he stormed out last night and never came back.” Wooten took a long sip of his beer and grimaced the way a kid does when he’s trying alcohol for the first time.

“We were supposed to be practicing for a gig. Apparently there’s some party at the Larson place but… if we don’t get any practice I don’t think we’ll be playing. Sergio probably already canceled it on us. I don’t know. I just think its over. So, if you know of anyone looking for a bass player, you tell ‘em I’m the guy!” He tried to laugh, but he didn’t sound very convincing.

“Yawl was gonna play at that party, huh?” Chuck asked. “Lotsa strange folks going out ta that thing. Ya may have dodged a bullet.”

“Strange folks?”

“Yeah. Couple of queers and even a tranny! You wouldn’t believe it” Chuck’s eyes glazed over. “I about started flirtin’ with her ‘til I heard her voice. God’s honest!” Chuck crossed his heart.

“Huh. Well, it’s definitely going to be something. I wonder if I can still go.” Wooten considered.

“Well. I’m going.” Chuck said.

“Huh?”

“Yeah. Received this in the mail this morning. Couldn’t believe it myself.” Chuck reached into his back pocket and pulled out an envelope. He laid it on the bar top.

“Is this… an invitation?” Wooten asked, pulling out the cardstock.

“Yep. And I know its legit, ‘cuz it looks exactly like the one that lady-boy had.” Chuck smiled. “Look, it’s even signed by her.”

“Who? The tranny?” Wooten asked. He immediately felt a little guilty calling the woman a slur, but he swallowed his bad feelings quickly.
